Unleash the potential of analytic driven fluid navigation

Fluid UI features like tiles, homepages, dashboards etc. make navigating the application intuitive and easy to use. Fluid navigation combined with pivot grid based analytic could help you achieve greater processing efficiency.I have taken a common use case in HR business area and have provided a simple comparison of its execution between classic navigation and analytic driven fluid navigation.

Use-case Scenario
HR administrator  to update a job attribute (e.g. contract end date) for a list of employees identified by,
– Specific job title
– In specific department
– Working in specific list of locations

Process in Classic UI

A typical approach to perform this activity would involve,

  1. Getting the list of employees using PS query or other reporting tool
  2. Navigate to the target component
  3. For each employee in the list,
    – Find the employee in the component search
    – Perform data updates
    – Exit the component and find next employee

Analytic driven Fluid Navigation

Fluid framework allow components to be accessed via pivot grid based analytic. This provide users with enhanced capabilities to slice and dice data to suit a variety of business requirements and is a better alternative to reports that address specific requirements.

A pivot grid built on a common data set like employee’s organization attributes – department, location, company etc. can be reused across multiple components. Analytic shown below with a list of filtering options allows the user to narrow  down the result set based on variety of attributes. Once the required data is listed, use the result table on the right hand side to access the component.

Shown below is an example of a fluid component that uses pivot grid search with master/detail feature enabled.

‘Master/Detail’ is a feature that allows the search results to be persistent in the left hand side of the component that acts as a master and the detailed component pages on the right hand side. This feature allows for easier navigation thru the search result set without losing it’s context.

It’s a no-brainer that the later option is intuitive and easy to use. Leaving that aside if we objectively compare the statistics of these two options, ratio of clicks required to perform a single transaction using these options stand at 4:1. In essence analytic driven fluid navigation is 75% more efficient than the classical navigation.

As seen in this example, fluid framework provides amazing capabilities to access application functionality. If you are contemplating fluid UI for PeopleSoft then “navigation” must be your highest priority. It is a low hanging fruit and getting it right would reap immediate quantifiable reward.

One of my earlier post this year on Staying classsic in PT 8.55 (for now) is by far the most searched and visited post of mine.

This picture below best describes my frustration that many users upgrading to PT 8.55 are still looking to stay in classic UI.

With PeopleTools 8.55 PeopleSoft customers have incredible potential to improve user experience and processing efficiency, unleash it!

Making sense with PeopleSoft on Oracle Cloud

Most of you by now have at some level come across the term PeopleSoft on Oracle cloud.
My observation at the Open World conference is that the understanding of PeopleSoft on Oracle cloud varied vastly among PeopleSoft users. While some were actively preparing to take their PeopleSoft application to Oracle cloud, some were hearing it for the first time and some just hate to hear PeopleSoft and cloud in the same sentence.

Well PeopleSoft on Oracle cloud simply means running your PeopleSoft application on Oracle’s cloud infrastructure instead of your on-premise infrastructure. It is still the application custom fit for your business processes maintained by you, when and how you prefer to do it. Instead of maintaining a large on-premise infrastructure investment you start consuming infrastructure as service and leverage the key benefits of cloud computing – agility, reduced cost and scalability.
Some customers have long been running PeopleSoft on 3rd party or other cloud infrastructure, so what has changed now?
Key differentiator is that the PeopleTools technology platform is now equipped to fully realize the potential of running PeopleSoft on cloud infrastructure. PeopleSoft Cloud Architecture utilities – Deployment Packages, Automated configuration manager etc. allows for dynamic scaling, quick patching and optimize hardware resources by creating middle-tier virtual machines (VMs) on demand. Most importantly these tools greatly simplify the process of migrating from on-premise to cloud infrastructure.

Why specifically Oracle cloud?
Some of the enhancements to PeopleTools technology can be leveraged on any cloud platform. However with its own cloud infrastructure, Oracle has built more capabilities that PeopleSoft can leverage to take this automation to the next level, which isn’t available at other cloud vendors. Cloud manager for PeopleSoft showcased at Open World is a perfect case in example, with purpose built orchestrations for Oracle cloud it greatly simplifies PeopleSoft environment management tasks, all from easy to use web front end, fancy that.

Even in this early days the value proposition that Oracle Cloud offers to PeopleSoft with features like cloud market place and cloud manager is worth noting and no doubt the list is set to grow.
Proliferation of cloud computing is one of the most impactful trends in the world of enterprise IT today. There is no doubt that majority of on-premise PeopleSoft workload will be moving to cloud infrastructure in the coming years and Oracle cloud is the destination of choice.

PeopleSoft will not just move to cloud but it will thrive in cloud because,

  • It’s now a product with the technology platform that can fully realize the potential of cloud computing.
  • Product maintenance has long gone agile with continuous delivery model and granted the power to customers thru selective adoption.
  • A unique value proposition for an enterprise product that can custom fit to business process yet stay agile and offer the benefits of cloud computing.

Keen to start exploring PeopleSoft on Oracle cloud?

Removing ‘Classic Home’ in Fluid UI

Following an earlier blog on Staying classic in PT 8.55, I received a question on ‘Removing Classic Home’ option from the navigation bar which is available by default in PT 8.55. Personalisation feature in classic home allows user to select ‘Left Hand Menu’ as navigation option, which could be a hack for users to revert to old ways of doing things. So removing ‘Classic Home’ on the navigation bar is essential for customers who want to go to fluid completely.

Quick steps to do this is provided below.

Removing ‘Classic Home’ from Navigation Bar

  • Navigate to Main Menu > PeopleTools > Portal > Structure and Content
  • Within structure and contents, navigate to Root > Fluid Structure and Content > Fluid Homepages
  • Open content reference for ‘Navigation Bar’ and access ‘Tile Content’ tab
  • In ‘PeopleSoft Application’ section – Uncheck ‘Include’ option for ‘Classic Home’ and set it as ‘optional’

Removing ability to add ‘Classic Home’ to Navigation Bar

  • Navigate to Main Menu > PeopleTools > Portal > Structure and Content
  • Within structure and contents, navigate to Root > Fluid Structure and Content > Fluid Pages > PeopleSoft Applications
  • Open content reference for ‘Classic Home’ and access ‘Fluid Content’ tab
  • In ‘Include in Repository’ section – Uncheck ‘NavBar’ option which by default is checked

Enabling Fluid Approvals (MAP) in PS Environments

Starting PeopleTools 8.54 approvals in PeopleSoft applications can be enabled for Fluid usage using Mobile Application Platform (MAP) technology. Setting up this feature was quite tricky in earlier days involving wide range of manual configuration and validation steps.

In the recent update images for demo environments delivered in PT 8.55 most of these steps are pre-configured. However couple of manual steps are needed post deployment to enable fluid approvals.

After deploying a new PS demo environment, when you login notice the approval tile displaying the default image, clicking on this tile will open a new page displaying the same image.

Perform “Local node introspection and deployment” for IB service – HMAP_APPROVALS

- Navigate to PeopleTools, Integration Broker, Integration Network WorkCenter.
- Under the Administration folder, click the Introspection and Deployment link.
- In the Search for Items - Introspection/Deployment page, select the Service - option to enable the Service field.
- Enter HMAP_APPROVAL in the Service field.
- Click Search.
- Enter the service HMAP_APPROVAL appears in the Select Items to Process group box.
- Select the HMAP_APPROVAL check box.
- Click Continue.
- On the Target page, select the Local Node option and then click Continue.
- On the Introspection/Deployment page, click the Introspect button.
- On the Introspection Results page, select all of the service operations that have the check boxes selected.
- Click the Deploy button.

After performing this task verify the fluid approvals tile to check if it is showing the count of pending approvals, if yes then configuration is complete. Click on the tile to check if the pending approvals page opens up.

FL_Mobile_Approvals _2

If an error message appears as below then proceed checking the following item.

FL_Mobile_Approvals _1

Check if the routing definition associated with the active service operations in HMAP_APPROVAL service is set to active. Typically following service operations are activated while performing the introspection and deployment step described above. Routing definitions between local node e.g. PSFT_HR and target node – WADL_NODE must be activated.

- 'XXX' represent application name e.g. 'HCM'

Once activated check if the approval tile is displaying the pending approvals count and when clicked opens up the fluid pending approvals page.

Please note the 2 steps discussed here are only applicable to PUM images 16 and above, which are delivered in PT 8.55 and uses DPK for deployment.

For PS environments earlier to that additional configuration steps may be required. As this setup has proven quite tricky since its introduction, there exists quite a few discussions in Oracle support and customer forums.

I found the below article in Oracle support which consolidates various errors and resolution steps to be quite useful – Doc ID 1990593.1

Fluid Candidate Gateway – First look

In my earlier posts I had shared my first hand experience of using deployment packages and Oracle Cloud service. While deployment packages drastically reduced the time and effort to setup a PS demo environment, now combining it with the power of cloud and marketplace, Oracle has taken this efficiency to a whole new level.

Update image 18 for HCM 9.2 application was released this week with a wide range of new features. As you may know by now, it’s no longer necessary to plough thru a bunch of documents to know the features, a video highlight of the key features is released as part of the updates – HCM PUM 18

A standout feature in this update is the fluid version of candidate gateway. Since seeing this as part of the road map last year, I was quite keen to get my hands on it. It simply is one of the most anticipated feature for customers using PeopleSoft recruiting solutions.

PeopleSoft Demo application – Image 18 is available on the Oracle Cloud Marketplace, details here – PeopleSoft HCM 9.2 Update Image 18 DEMO

To get this demo application deployed from the market place, a subscription to Oracle compute and storage cloud is required either on free-trial or a paid one. Choose to deploy the application and go thru a handful of guided steps to complete the process.

By the end of submission, deployment process begins and in couple of hours the demo environment is up and running.

Here is the first look of candidate gateway on a mobile,

A key concern from PeopleSoft customers on selective adoption is the difficulty in adjusting to the pace of continuous delivery model where new application features are released thick and fast every 3 months.

Oracle has now simplified the enterprise application deployment process to a comical level. From getting notified of a new feature to getting your hands on it in couple of hours time –  that’s simply incredible!

Now it’s up to customers to start making the best use of these features.
